History of Quilt Waco

Stitching Love into Every Quilt

After dreaming of and wishing for a gathering where we could put our passion for quilting to good use in the community, a few people met to cast a vision.  Some had been members of quilting groups in Waco and other places in the world, and some had never quilted before. All wanted to get quilts to children in tough situations, so that's where we started early in 2023.

With Project Linus as a known example, we decided to gather some simple patterns, to create some cut and ready-to-go kits, and start meeting at least monthly.  We did not want to limit ourselves to serving any particular niche, and decided to keep our ears open to people in need. We began by taking our first quilts to Woodway, Hewitt and Waco police stations to be given to children in difficult situations.

Some of our quilts have been donated to Project Linus of Temple (where the closest Children's Hospital is), but the majority have been delivered to people and agencies in our own community.  Several quilts were donated to Meals on Wheels to be given to homebound folks in McLennan County. Quilts have also been given when group members learn of a child newly diagnosed with cancer, or an international Baylor student recovering from surgery and far from home. Our greatest desire is to share the love with others, seconded only by the desire not to store up our quilts. We are currently working with Foster Village Waco and Isaiah 117 House to get quilts to foster kids. New needs and ideas are welcome!

We are eager each month to hear where quilts have been delivered and what else God might be up to through us.  We have been blessed by generous donors--we now own eight or nine Janome sewing machines, and have "inherited" yards and yards (and even bolts) of desirable fabrics. Our group has gratefully welcomed friends, neighbors, and even grandchildren to sew with us. Newcomers are always welcome--and we have all that you need to get started (materials, machines, notions, patterns, and even mentors)!
